Water is heavy and sprinklers are heavier. All that weight can easily compact the soil, costing your customers time in equipment adjustment and repairs, as well as money when it comes to a reduction in their yield. A lot of this hassle and loss is avoidable just by changing the kind of tires they use.
The challenge of bias ply tires
There’s a good chance that most of your customers are using bias ply tires on their irrigation equipment. With bias tires, all of the sidewall flexing is transferred to the tread because they share the same plies.
With all of the weight of the water and equipment being directed into a concentrated contact patch, it can severely compact the soil. This causes deep ruts that can make it hard for a wheel to move. This resistance can put a lot of strain on the pivot’s gearboxes.
Equipment stress is only the beginning, however. The real damage is seen during the harvest, when farmers yields are reduced because the soil compaction damaged the root zone and nothing could grow in those patches.
Floats are one way to mitigate this damage, but there’s an alternative: radial implement tires.
Enter radial implement tires
Radial implement tires are flatter than rounded bias tires, which allows them to create a larger footprint and distribute the equipment and water weight across a wider plane. This alone reduces soil compaction.
Additionally, radial implement tires allow heavier loads to run on a lower PSI. This gives the tire an even larger footprint and an even greater reduction in soil compaction. And the reinforced sidewalls and stronger plies of radial implements resist side impacts, which makes it easier for the pivot to climb out of its tracks without getting stuck.
Radial tires fits standard pivot wheels, and they don’t require any tubes. Even at lower pressure, the heavy load rating makes radial tires ideal for corner arm applications. The tire’s lug pattern also provides better cleanout in heavy soils and muddy fields, and it has stronger radial construction compared to a bias tire.
